Introduction Windows XP (3days)

Module 1. Install Windows XP

This module explains the functions of an Operating System. Then it looks at the pc Operating System history and it dicusses current Operating Systems. We prepare for and install Windows XP Professional. We look at tools and tips to troubleshoot the Installation and finish by explaining the possibilities for upgrading older Windows versions.

Module 2. Configure & Customize

This module starts with explaining and setting the properties of the display (and multiple monitors). Then we take a look at Windows XP help. Control Panel is discussed in detail, with practical exercises on most of the tools.

Module 3. Users & Groups

This module explains users, groups, home folders and user profiles in Windows XP. The module distinguishes workgroups from domains. The different built-in user accounts and group accounts are explained. Students will create and manage their own accounts.

Module 4. Disk Management

The module explains harddisks, primary partitions and extended partition. We then explain Dynamic Disks, simple volumes, mirroring and RAID 5 volumes. Students upgrade from Basic to Dynamic Disks and mount a Simple Volume. Defragmenting Disks is also discussed.

Module 5. NTFS

This module introduces NTFS, comparing NTFS with other file systems. Basic NTFS Permissions are explained. Students will experience what happens when they copy or move secured files. The module continues with NTFS Compression (discussing lossless and lossy formats), NTFS Encryption (EFS) and Disk Quotas.

Module 6. Sharing Folders

This module explains the concept of sharing a folder and setting shared folder permissions. Students will learn different ways to connect to shared folders. We will discuss the combination of Shared Folder and NTFS Permissions and look at the Administrative Shared Folders.

Module 7. Printers

This module will cover the basics of a print server, printer driver, spooling and printing. We explain how to setup different clients to connect to the printer. IPP is also explained and practiced. On request, students can setup seperator pages, a printing

pool, nightshift printers or priority printers.

Module 8. Troubleshooting

This module uses the Computer Management Tool for troubleshooting, with a special focus on the Event Viewer and the Remote Desktop. We also discuss the Task Manager and the F8 Advanced Startup Options. Students will setup and use the Recovery Console, and backup and restore a file with the backup utility.

Module 9. TCP/IP configuration

This module explains tcp/ip settings, DHCP and APIPA. How to test tcp/ip communication and the windows XP client side name resolution process (hosts, dns, wins).

Module 10. Monitoring & Auditing

Using the Performance Tool, Setting Alerts and Auditing Access to workstations, files and printers
