DESCRIPTION This intensive training focuses exclusively on developing database bound Visual Basic (6.0 & VB.NET) applications. You will be up to date with the latest tools and techniques that reduce time in developing data bound forms and reports. In the process, you will acquire in-depth knowledge of the available technologies (ADO & ADO.NET, UDA, ODBC, DAO, Jet, DSN, etc) to establish database connections. The course also includes a workshop on class programming. You will be aware of some classic problems you may encounter in database programming, and will be equipped you with standard solutions. Developing VB applications should get a lot easier and quicker after this course.

OUTLINES

Session 1: Data Technologies Overview

• Overview of the technologies for database programming. "From DAO to ADO and ADO.NET". Explains concepts like MS Jet, DSNs, ODBS & ODBC Direct, UDA, RDO & RJO in a straight-forward way. You know how it works, why it was developed that way, what the possibilities and limitations are.
• Overview of the DAO object model
• Overview of ADO object model
• Exercise: exploring the DAO object model
• Exercise: exploring the ADO object model
• Exercise: Using a DSN in DAO & ADO (ODBC)

Session 2: Implementing Data Technologies in Visual Basic

• Overview of the alternative ways to establish a database connection in VB / VB.NET:
  • Using DAO or ADO code
  • Using a DAO or ADO data control & data bound countrols
  • Using the Data Environment Designer
  • Data binding: data bound classes &
  • ADO.NET: architecture, data providers, DataSet object, data designers & data binding, XML integration

Session 3: Workshop on Using the Data Environment Designer

• We establish a connection to an Access database a visualize a table on two forms: a one-record layout and a data grid layout.
• We explore The Data Environment Designers' capabilities to filter and sort records, to implement grouping of records and to design one-to-many relations.
• We explore the code that can be implemented in forms to modify the Data Designer tables and queries.

Session 4: Workshop on Using the Data Report Designer

• We design a report with the Data Report Designer and insert the code to open the report with a filter.
• We explore the code to show Access reports from VB.

Session 5: Crash Course on Class Programming

• In order so we can explore how to design data bound classes, a crash course will teach you what classes are and how to design them.
• Workshop: designing a class that handles reading and writing to ASCII (.txt) files.

Session 6: Data Binding and Data Bound Classes

• We explore how to make classes data bound with an exercise.
• Implementing Data Formatting

Session 7: Tips & Advanced Techniques

• Password protected databases and user-level security
• Constructions to design applications that can handle a missing database and a variable database path.
